Micro-energy harvesting using integrated PMU and solar cell on chip

The problem/challenge

With the rise in IoT, innovative energy harvesting solutions as needed to power sensors and devices. Connecting these sensors and devices to a fixed power source is often not ideal nor possible.

The invention/product

A novel system for micro-energy harvesting has been developed. The system includes a solar cell (1 mm2) and PMU on the same substrate.

The system has been designed and fabricated in standard 0.18μm CMOS technology achieving a form factor of 1.575 mm2. Harvested power ranges from nW to μ W. The system is able to start-up from 2.38 nW of harvested power without any external kick off or control signal. For more information, please see: https://youtu.be/xf-hmnli5rM

The system is patented, lab validated, and is currently at TRL4.

Companies/industry we are looking for

The system is suitable for applications in IoT devices, implantable devices, wearables. It can also be integrated with external energy harvesting sensors.

Next steps/Activities

We are looking for licensing deals, as well as collaborations for the upcoming TETRAMAX TTX calls.
